1. Dogs And Humans Evolved Together: They say a dog is man’s best friend and there’s a lot of truth to that. Humans and dogs have evolved together since the earliest point of dog domestication – 32,000 years ago.

University of Chicago researchers found that multiple sets of genes in humans and dogs evolved in parallel with nutrition, digestion, neurology and disease. This is by far one of the most amazing dog facts!

2. Unlike Most Animals, Small Dogs Live Longer Than Large Dogs.: In most of the animal kingdom, size has been correlated with longevity, but not in dogs. Scientists are confused as to why smaller dogs live longer. 

Some think that dogs larger than puppies grow faster and can therefore develop diseases. Small dogs live from 10 to 15 years, medium dogs from 10 to 13 and large dogs from 8 to 12 years.

3. Dogs Sweat Through Their Paws: One of the most weird dog facts, is that on hot summer days, dogs regularly open their mouths and pant to cool off. The only sweat glands they have are in their paws, but it has more to do with traction, than temperature.

4. Dogs Sometimes Smell Like Fritos: Well, here’s one of the most hilarious dog facts!  Many pet owners have commented that their dog smells like popcorn or Fritos. Believe it or not, this smell has nothing to do with their diet. It’s due to bacteria that grows on their paws!

5. Dogs Have Three Eyelids: Like humans, dogs have an upper and lower eyelid, but they also have a third one called the nictitating membrane. It has various functions such as removing debris and mucus and tearing.

6. Dogs Dream Just Like Humans: Another one of the weird dog facts, is that dogs have dreams just like we do when we go to sleep. If you want to see it in action, wait 20 minutes after your dog falls asleep. Your dog will probably have her/his first dream at this point and you will see her/his eyes moving behind her/his eyelids.

7. Domestic Dogs Can Breed With Wolves: Since dogs and wolves still have enough similar DNA, they are able to mate and breed puppies. Called wolfhounds, there are an estimated 300,000 in the United States.

8. A Dog’s Sense Of Smell Is Far Superior To That Of Humans: Dogs have a great sense of smell, most people know this. However, what they may not know is that some dogs can have a sense of smell in excess of 100,000. They have about 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses. Humans only have 10 million.

9. Dogs Can Smell Emotions: One of the very odd dog facts is that because a dog’s sense of smell is so strong, they can tell when we are fearful or anxious. When we are anxious, we sweat easily. We can’t see or smell it, but a dog can tell you how we’re feeling.

10. Baboons Sometimes Kidnap Dogs: A viral video went around showing a Taif Baboon kidnapping a puppy and allegedly keeping it as a pet. While baboons have been known to kidnap females of their own species and even dogs, scientists have made it clear that they don’t keep them as their pets.
